Abstract

Dr. Alvin S. Johnson is the first president and longtime president emeritus of the New School for Social Research. The collection consists of a photo album featuring the Johnson-Deyrup family, three honorary degrees granted to Johnson, and a letter certifying the passage of New York Fair Employment Act of 1945.

Ingrith Deyrup diaries and paintings

Summary

Ingrith Deyrup (1919-2004) was a daughter of Alvin Johnson, president of the New School from 1922-1946. The collection consists of a diary that Ingrith kept as a teenager, as well as six small landscape paintings. The diaries provide an intimate look at the life of a New York family deeply immersed in the cultural, artistic, and social life of Manhattan in the 1930s, through the eyes of the 15 and 16-year old Ingrith.

The New School Associates was the first fundraising body associated with the New School for Social Research. Composed of faculty, former students, school administrators and supporters of the school’s aims, the Associates sponsored numerous events and an annual membership drive. These records represent the administration of the Associates from the mid-1940s through the 1970s. Art exhibition records extend into the 1980s.

This collection encompasses material related to the overall administration of The New School from 1928-2008. It includes reports, financial papers, board of trustees meeting agendas and minutes, and documents prepared for accrediting by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The bulk of the files date from the late 1940s-early 1960s and the 1990s-2000s. Of note is "The New School Study" of 1952, also known as the "Swift Report."
