Cooking and Typography, 2013-2017

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 26-28

Scope and Contents

Comprised of work created in Parsons School of Design courses taught by Steve Kennedy in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, in which each student contributed a personal narrative accompanying a recipe and a typeface. Includes two books from the courses Typography Core and Language and Letterforms, Fall 2013; one book produced in the course, Explorations in Typography, Spring 2014. According to Kennedy, the students trimmed out sheets, scored, folded and sewed the books into a letter press printer wrapper. The 2017 book consists of a bound publication representing the work of two sections of Kennedy's first-year studio class. The 2017 course is described by Kennedy as follows: "Typography is an essential part of our everyday lives: in print, on screen, and in the built environment. This class explores the function and meaning of typography through an introduction to its history, theory, and practice in art and design contexts, including but not limited to graphic design, product design, illustration, architecture, and fine arts. Through short, conceptual exercises in collection, interpretation, type making and basic type setting, students explore the relationship of form and order to explicit and implicit meaning."
