 File — Box: Mixed nav_1, Reel: NS070207_000006

Abstract

The topic of this luncheon was the recent New York newspaper strike of late 1962 to early 1963. New York State Board of Mediation labor mediator Julius Manson brings the meeting to order and gives a brief introduction of International Typographers Union president Bertram Powers, who begins speaking at 5:48. Powers recounts the history of the negotiations leading to the strike and its resolution, factors contributing to the length of the strike, and the issue of increasing automation of the typesetting process. A period of questions and answers begins at 28:57 (most questions are inaudible), which includes benefits for striking workers, the role of public opinion, the issue of arbitration, the contribution of Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr., and forming a council of unions.
