This audio recording is one of four sessions that were presented as part of a 1965 conference at The New School for Social Research on leadership in African American communities and civic organizations. The conference was presented by the New School Associates and the Urban League of Greater New York. This session was a workshop entitled ,"Where and How You Can Serve?," by Dr. Hilda Fortune of Brooklyn College, with members of the Citywide Health and Welfare Committee of the Urban League in attendance. The moderator in the recording is identified only as "Gladys," and no further identifying data is available. Gladys presents Dr. Fortune at the beginning of the session and Dr. Fortune begins her presentation at 4:08, discussing the definition and qualities of leaders, group dynamics, and the importance of cultivating leadership and problem-solving skills. At 24:38 a dialogue is initiated between Gladys and Dr. Fortune regarding community service organizations, issues of participation and leadership, and how to get started as a leader in the community. Audience questions are also taken during this portion. Question topics include connecting youth with community organizations, and motivating participation in civic groups.
