This audio recording is one of four sessions presented as part of a 1965 conference at the New School for Social Research on leadership in African American communities and civic organizations. The conference was presented by the New School Associates and the Urban League of Greater New York. This session is entitled, "Leadership Bank Opens Now: Jobs to be Done" and consists of presentations by Alexander Allen and John Keppler. The moderator is identified only as "Mrs. Austin" and begins the program with an introduction of Alexander Allen. At 4:40, Allen begins his remarks on promoting and sustaining community organizations and state agencies and the importance of participation. At 18:58 Mrs. Austin introduces John Keppler, who begins his remarks at 20:26 on the weaknesses and strengths of health and welfare program planning. Questions and answers begin at 53:58 which include expanding participation on executive boards beyond existing networks, participation of citizens in economically disadvantaged areas in the leadership and decision-making affecting those areas, the need for training new board members to assume responsibility, and potential resoruces of the Urban League of Greater New York for other community groups. The second part of the recording continues the question and answer session and Mrs. Austin concludes the session at 4:31.
