This audio recording is of a special seminar held at The New School on the subject of science, society, and the future. New School Associates board member Gwen Williams introduces the moderator, New School professor Ralph Buultjens, who speaks at 2:10, introducing the panelists and the first speaker, writer Isaac Asimov. Asimov begins at 10:02, discussing the importance of advances in science and technology for dealing with coming social crises such as energy depletion and overpopulation. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Rosalyn Yalow speaks at 42:14 on advances in nuclear medicine and the use of radio isotopes in treatment and diagnosis, and warns against anti-nuclear and anti-science trends in society. Wassily Leontief of the Insititute for Economic Analysis at New York University speaks at 1:05:22 on economics and the future.
In the second part of the recording, Wassily Leontief continues his remarks, discussing the problem of the automatization of labor and the resulting job dislocation in society, and the importance of active economic policy to avoid social upheaval. At 27:03 New School professor Ralph Buultjens introduces designer and educator Buckminster Fuller, who speaks at 28:09 on the advances in technology that have occurred in his lifetime, and the potential for technology to change the nature of society. Fuller concludes at 55:48, and Buultjens poses questions to the panelists regarding the assertions of their speeches. Writer Isaac Asimov and physicist Rosalyn Yalow respond and follow up their earlier comments.
In the third part of the recording, Rosalyn Yalow continues her comments from the previous recording, and New School professor Ralph Buultjens poses additional questions to writer Isaac Asimov, economist Wassily Leontief, and designer Buckminster Fuller, and concludes the program.
