Series 2. Subject files, 1879-1975
Scope and Contents
This series contains the alphabetized subject files created by Mayer as dean of the New School and her administrative assistants in the Dean's Office. Included are files documenting individuals, organizations, and New School administrative divisions such as schools, departments, programs, and committees. The majority of the material in this series consists of correspondence, but also encompasses items such as: internal reports on the New School; inter-office memos and draft policy papers; materials on conferences and special events held at the New School; meeting minutes; and faculty information, including correspondence, and course proposals and descriptions. Among the notable correspondents included here are: Martin Buber, Saul Bellow, Edward Bernays, John Cage, W.E.B. Du Bois, Albert Einstein, Erich Fromm, Alvin Johnson, Albert Mayer, Meyer Schapiro, and Adlai Stevenson. Items related to Mayer's contributions to the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe (CARE) in the late 1940s and 1950s are also found in this series, as the donations were made through her office at the New School.
