 Series

Scope and Contents

Includes reference photographs of Eugene Paul Ullman's oil paintings and original artwork created by Eugene Paul Ullman, primarily in the form of pencil and pastel sketches.

The reference photographs are primarily black and white reference reproductions in varying states of condition. Many images are affixed to cardstock and annotated by Pierre L. Ullman with information regarding provenance, exhibition and publication history, and identification of subjects and locations. Reference image files may also contain correspondence to and from Pierre L. Ullman regarding more current dispositions of paintings. For information about a specific title, the Kellen Design Archives has created an inventory of Eugene Paul Ullman's paintings, although it is not comprehensive. The file labeled "Children" includes reproductions of portraits of Ullman's oldest son, Allen, and his youngest son, Pierre, as infants.

Childhood drawings (mostly pencil, with isolated use of watercolors or colored ink) predominantly depict horses and carriages, masted ships, birds, and human figures in profile. All were mounted on heavy gray paper backing but have peeled off as adhesives failed. Many are initialled, "EPU." One small drawing of a Christmas tree and Santa Claus is addressed to Paul from Allen, presumably Ullman's children.

Sketches produced as an adult predominantly depict nudes, although a significant portion also depict musicians (Ullman's second wife, Suzanne, was a pianist, and Ullman played the violin), Suzanne, and what appear to be café or bar scenes. Also included here are five sketchbooks, ranging in size from 3-3/4 inches x 5-1/4 inches to 8-1/2 inches x 10-1/2 inches featuring pencil sketches.
