Name files, 1902-1959, 1995, undated

Scope and Contents

Name files typically consist of one to three items of original handwritten correspondence accompanied by a typed transcription, a translation if applicable (much correspondence is in French), and a biographical note or annotation provided by Pierre L. Ullman. A small number of files also include clippings and manuscript materials.

Some correspondence is addressed only to Eugene Paul Ullman, while other letters are addressed to Ullman's second wife Suzanne, or to the entire Ullman family. Letters of condolence upon the premature deaths of Ullman's son, Paul, and Suzanne comprise much of the correspondence. The majority of correspondents are fellow artists, critics, and others connected with the art world in Western Europe and in the United States. The bulk of the correspondence dates from the mid-twentieth century. According to the donor, Eugene Paul Ullman was selective in which correspondence he deemed worthy of retention. Pierre L. Ullman notes that Gertrude Stein's letters to his father were destroyed, although it is unclear by whom.

The William Merritt Chase file includes three letters from Chase to Ullman; a signed photographic portrait of Chase and a signed reproduction of a portrait of Alfred Stieglitz by Chase (Box 14); a letter from Charles W. Hawthorne regarding fund raising for a bust of Chase; and a prospectus for the New York School of Art covering the years 1896 through 1902. The prospectus is the only copy known to the Kellen Design Archives. For more about Ullman's relationship with his mentor, consult the manuscript drafts titled "Chase" and "John Sargent" in the Writings series. A photograph of Ullman with a Chase class will be found in the Biographical series under Photographs.
