Scope and Contents
Consists of transcripts of interviews with formerly enslaved people relating to their religious conversion experiences. The interviews were collected in the book, God struck me dead : religious conversion experiences and autobiographies of ex-slaves, by Clifton H Johnson, originally published by Fisk University in 1941. Radin wrote the foreword. The book was reissued by Pilgrim Press in 1969 and, in 1972, as Volume XIX of The American Slave by Greenwood Press. Included herein are original and photocopies of typescripts for this volume. It is not clear which edition the typescripts here are based upon. Diamond edited a book on Radin, Culture in history: essays in honor of Paul Radin, Octagon Books, 1981.
