Biographical / Historical
Sylvia Plachy was a Hungarian-American photographer born in Budapest in 1943. Her family fled the 1956 revolution, settling in New Jersey. Plachy received a degree from Pratt Institute and in 1974 she became a staff photographer for The Village Voice, where she worked for thirty years. Plachy’s photographs have also appeared in The New York Times, Fortune, and Art Forum, and her works are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, among other institutions.
