Dolls, 1996
Scope and Contents
Thirteen Robert Tonner dolls dressed in clothes inspired by a notable American fashion designer, typically with some Parsons School of Design association. The last page of the 1996 fashion benefit show program lists all of the nearly fifty dolls that were part of this doll exhibition, which took place the year Parsons celebrated its centenary. The dolls represented a range of designers, however, not just those with close Parsons connections.
The original boxes in which the dolls were transfered to the archives were rectangular and low, and patterned with small white hearts against a red background. In the show, the dolls were held upright by thin rods mounted on Lucite bases. A small photograph album accompanying the dolls shows how they were displayed at the show.
According to the 1996 program, the doll exhibition was coordinated by Robert Tonner of the Robert Tonner Doll Co.; Harris Safier, Tonner's partner; Donna Morris, and Clinton Koupus of Parsons School of Design Exhibitions. Tonner graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1975.
