Scope and Contents

These recordings are mostly of meetings of the New York branch of the Democracy Seminar. The Democracy Seminar was a series of seminars held from 1984 until the 1990s, simultaneously in New York, Warsaw, Budapest and Prague, and later in other cities across Eastern and Central Europe. The seminars discussed classic and recent texts on democratic theory and authoritarianism, with a particular focus on the countries of the Eastern Bloc. The New York branch met in the Wolff Conference Room at 65 Fifth Avenue, which was at the time the Graduate Faculty building. This subseries also contains a recording from the 1984 conference "The Presence of Myth in Everyday Life," and recordings of two seminars from the late 1990s that are likely not part of the Democracy Seminar. Not all New York meetings of the Democracy Seminar are included in this collection.
