Scope and Content of Collection
Collection consists entirely of final projects submitted to instructor and book artist Susan Leopold for the School of Art, Media and Technology course entitled "Time: Frame." Following a class visit by Archives staff to introduce artists' books, Leopold provided each student with one volume from her personal set of the 1941 Standard American Encyclopedia and asked them to transform the volume into an artwork while simultaneously maintaining the physical appearance of a book. Students were to consider the concepts of nostalgia, history, and accuracy of information.
Although students were required to submit both the artwork and a PDF document created using the software InDesign, only the artwork was transferred to The New School Archives. Students inserted their own drawings and writings into the pages of the books, carved out pages to form sculptural elements, created digital media to house within the volumes, and altered the bindings.
