Historical note
The Communication Design department at Parsons School of Design at The New School was first established in 1910, as the Advertising and Commercial Illustration program at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. The program underwent many name changes, and does not appear to have had a consistent name in its early years, being variously referred to as a program in advertising, illustration, commercial or graphic art, poster design, and industrial design. From 1955 onwards, it is more consistently referred to as a program in “Graphic Design,” and after 1972 as “Communication Design,” although individual degree programs continued to use “Graphic Design.”
The Communication Design BFA is the oldest-standing undergraduate of its kind in the United States. Its curriculum focuses on theoretical and practical applications of the visual presentation of information. As of June 2024, the program is part of the School of Art, Media, and Technology within the Parsons School of Design.
