Scope and Contents

New School in the News was a bound publication produced by the Office of University Communications and disseminated by the Office of External Affairs. Clippings were assembled and bound into monthly or seasonal editions that were distributed to various New School offices. Each issue consists of photocopies of print media coverage that features the New School within a specific date range. The collection includes only a few bound editions, covering 1997 to 1999. The bound editions are located in Series 2. A majority of the collection (Series 1) comprises unbound photocopied clippings that were most likely intended for use in bound editions.

New School in the News was part of the university’s larger media relations program, which sought to increase coverage of university programs, achievements, and activities, as well as to monitor how the university and its divisions are portrayed in the media. The assembled clippings include media coverage from across the country, in addition to coverage by major New York-based publications, including The New York Times, Newsday, and the Village Voice. The collection coincides with a number of notable university wide events, such as the Mobilization movement in 1997, and reflects the media’s perception of the university during this time.

As of 2024, the New School in the News is no longer distributed in print form. The publication was likely discontinued in the 2010s as the university expanded its digital presence. The New School website maintains the blog page, “In the Headlines,” which carries on the work of New School in the News: https://blogs.newschool.edu/news/in-the-headlines/. The earliest known iteration of “In the Headlines” appears in the Wayback Machine in January 2011. As of October 2024, “In the Headlines” continues to be updated periodically. The blog page hyperlinks to articles published by external media outlets that mention The New School and its academic divisions or centers.

Historical note

New School in the News was a bound publication that contained photocopies of print media coverage that featured The New School. The editions of New School in the News were produced by the New School Communications Office (also called the Office of University Communications). The publications were disseminated by the university’s Office of External Affairs between the late 1990s and early 2000s.

For many years, at least into the 1980s, New School university divisions (i.e., colleges) were responsible for their own publicity and operated separately. The unit established to maintain overall university public relations was known as the New School Publicity Office. A detailed chronology of the New School Publicity Office is found in the historical note for the New School Publicity Office records (NS.03.01.05).

The administrative unit responsible for publicity and communications went through multiple name changes over the years, including the Information Office (also known as the Office of Public Information), which supplanted the Publicity Office between 1957-1959. Publicity and Public Relations also overlapped with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations between the 1970s and 1990s. It is unclear what year the Publicity Office was succeeded by and renamed the New School Communications Office (alternatively called the Office of University Communications). George Calderaro was the director of this office from 1995 until 2005.

After New School University rebranded as The New School in 2005, the New School Communications Office rebranded, as well, becoming Communications and External Affairs (CEA). CEA was the administrative department of The New School responsible for public relations and marketing messaging for the university. Its primary focus was to produce recruitment materials for prospective students for all New School colleges. The office was renamed Marketing and Communications at some point between 2014-2015. As of 2024, the New School’s Marketing and Communication website indicates that the mission of the department is to "create messages in all media forms that build awareness and engagement with the university's diverse offerings among prospective and current students, the New School community, and the world."

The staff of The New School Archives and Special Collections assembled this collection from files that probably originated from the university's Communications and External Affairs department, although the date of transfer and provenance is unknown.

Malcolm Carter was the director of The New School's university communications from 1985 to 1991. The collection documents three primary areas of activity over which Carter had oversight: advertising and marketing; public relations; and publications.

The New School Office of Communications, George Calderaro records (NS.03.01.03) comprises video recordings, clippings, publicity samples, advertising materials, and topical office files (including press releases) created by Calderaro as director of the department from 1995 to 2005. Box 4, folder 1 in the Calderaro records contains the Spring 1998 and March 1999 issues of the bound New School University in the News publication.
