Unlike the other materials in this collection, this digital video, migrated from a DVD, was not transferred from the Fine Arts Department, but rather was donated by Carlson to The New School Archives at the time that he narrated an oral history interview with the director of The New School Archives. Carlson's thesis project applied refinement techniques to environmental detritus (described in the video as "viscous sludge") dredged from the polluted Newtown Creek in New York at the border of Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Long Island City, Queens, as a model for generating energy. The video documents the process, following Carlson as he pumps sludge from the creek, refines it, and, on the roof of a Greenpoint building with the New York City skyline as backdrop, erects a sign that reads, "Powered by Newtown Creek." The video culminates with the sign lighting up, powered by the dredged material. A group of Carlson's friends cheer in the background.
