The New School Archives And Special Collections

Administrative records regarding the formation and development of Eugene Lang College, 1983-1987, as well as audio recordings of a colloquium and convocation in 1985 and academic lectures from 1986.

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts is the undergraduate liberal arts college of The New School university system. Librarians in the former Raymond Fogelman Library established this collection of printed materials and ephemera created by the Eugene Lang College administration, faculty, or students, and The New School Archives staff occasionally adds to the collection. The bulk of the collection consists of student periodicals in the form of newspapers and journals.

The collection consists of audiovisual recordings of events, including concerts, lectures, and an orientation, sponsored by Eugene Lang College, the undergraduate liberal arts division of The New School.

With roots in earlier undergraduate initiatives at The New School, Eugene Lang College was named in 1985 for its benefactor, establishing for the first time a division at The New School dedicated solely to educating traditional college-age undergraduates. The collection consists of files produced by the Eugene Lang College Dean's Office and saved to floppy disk, covering a range of topics from space allocation to curriculum development to strategic planning, budget projections and faculty salaries.

Written essays and visual maps in analog and digital formats created by Eugene Lang College seniors, collected in the 2010s for a project initiated by Dean Stephanie Browner to "help us see and understand your intellectual journey."

Eugene Paul Ullman (1877-1953), was an American painter of landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. Ullman studied and later taught with artist William Merritt Chase during the earliest years of the Chase School, predecessor school to what became Parsons School of Design. The collection consists of artwork in the form of sketches and photographs of paintings, correspondence, exhibition catalogs, a scrapbook, and unpublished essay manuscripts.

Much of the material is annotated by Ullman's youngest son, Pierre L. Ullman. Also included are files documenting the life of an older son, Paul Ullman, who was killed in France during the Second World War.

The Fashion and Diversity event series at The New School was organized in 2016 by three students in the Master of Arts in Fashion Studies program at Parsons School of Design, The New School's art and design college. The collection consists of a recording of "Fashion and Race," one of the events in the series, as well as the contents of a Google Drive folder containing documents related to the series planning and production.

Contains printed and moving image publicity materials produced for late twentieth century fashion designers, including: Calvin Klein, Donna Karan (DKNY), Joseph Abboud, Pierre Balmain, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger. Also holds printed matter created for Parsons School of Design alumni Anna Sui, Badgley Mischka, Isaac Mizrahi, Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez, Peter Speliopoulus, and Bruce (Daphne Gutierrez and Nicole Noselli).

Consists of 19 scrapbooks containing more than 10,000 prints of fashion illustrations produced between the early 1800s and 1913. The prints primarily depict clothing and accessories designs, with a few depicting theatrical costumes, architectural and sculptural details, and textile designs. Many images were issued as portfolio prints, others cut from books and periodicals, such as Graham's Magazine and Godey's Lady's Book and Magazine.

Saks Fifth Avenue compiled this collection of more than 1,100 slides depicting fashion runway shows in the 1990s. The 35 mm slides depict haute couture and ready-to-wear collections from an array of fashion labels, including Adrienne Vittadini, Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Issey Miyake, Max Mara, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Rifat Ozbek, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Yves Saint-Laurent, and many others.

Former Parsons School of Design students include but are not limited to Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Badgley Mischka, Isaac Mizrahi, Charlotte Neuville, Anna Sui, and Yeohlee Teng. Dan and Corina Lecca, Chris Moore, and Dino Scrimali are some of the photographers whose work is represented in the collection.
