Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe, Inc., 1947-1961
Scope and Contents
Founded in 1945, CARE was a charitable organization focused on sending food aid to Europe in the aftermath of World War II. The primary form of aid came in the form of "CARE packages," pre-selected and packaged parcels of food and other essential items purchased by individuals and sent on their behalf to people in Europe. Clara Mayer and the Mayer family sent several dozens of such care packages throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. Included here are order forms and correspondence with CARE officials, as well as correspondence with CARE package recipients, primarily in East and West Germany and France. Notes herein indicate where correspondence includes photographs. Many letters are in German. Researchers interested in Mayer's contributions to post-war Europe relief efforts should also see material in this collection relating to Foster Parents Plan, Inc.
