 File — Box: 6, Folder: 4-5

Scope and Contents

The Fontainebleau Schools comprised a series of music and fine arts schools founded by Walter Damrosch (director of the New York Symphony Orchestra and brother of Clara Damrosch Mannes) at the request of the United States military in France in 1921, immediately after the First World War. Classes were held in the Louis XV wing of the Chateau of Fontainebleau.

These photographs show both the buildings of Fontainebleau as well as classrooms, rehearsals, classes, and Mannes students and faculty studying at Fontainebleau. Also included is a photograph of a 1971 50th anniversary party hosted by Nadia Boulanger.
