Kaufman joined the Mannes faculty in 1974 to teach the history and theory of music. After 1979, Kaufman became one of the primary leaders of Mannes, serving as its president and dean. This file contains photographs focused specifically on Kaufman, although he appears in many other photographs in other series, sections, and folders throughout this collection.

Scope and Contents The Fontainebleau Schools comprised a series of music and fine arts schools founded by Walter Damrosch (director of the New York Symphony Orchestra and brother of Clara Damrosch Mannes) at the request of the United States military in France in 1921, immediately after the First World War. Classes were held in the Louis XV wing of the Chateau of Fontainebleau. These photographs show both the buildings of Fontainebleau as well as classrooms, rehearsals, classes, and Mannes students...
