Scrapbook, circa 1860-1890
Scope and Contents
Arranged by country or city of origin: France, Germany, England, Italy, Berlin, London, Brunswick, the scrapbook contains photographs of opera singers and stage actors, including Emilio Naudin, Désirée Artôt, and Mary Anne Stirling; artists such as Gustave Doré and Rosa Bonheur; novelist Henri Murger; composers such as Joseph Joachim, Adolf von Henselt, and a missing space for a picture of Richard Wagner; and members of royalty such as King Victor Emanuel II of Italy, his sons Prince Umberto (later Umberto I of Italy) and Prince Amadeo (later Amadeo I of Spain), Alexandra, Princess of Wales (later Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom) and Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia. The photographs are affixed to paper pages, with the names handwritten beneath the images. There is a handwritten index of the photographs in the back of the book. Also included--loosely tucked between pages entitled, "United States"--are three issues of The Season: An Independent Critical Journal, a tabloid-sized one-sheet reporting on the New York City arts scene, dated September 9, 1871; September 23, 1871; and July 8, 1871; and two photographic prints on thin paper, one of an artwork (possibly entitled "Thé Russe") and the other a landscape. Both photographs are annotated on the back with comments by the photographer, who is not identified. Also loose in the scrappbook, tucked between blank pages, are a print of an illustration entitled “Homeless Boy” with a charity appeal on the back and a page depicting a pair of male wrestlers in various poses torn from an unknown publication. The loose materials, including the issues of The Season, are stored separately from the scrapbook for preservation purposes. The spine of the scrapbook is printed with the word, "Herbarium."
