Alvin Johnson honorary degrees and family photographs
Dr. Alvin S. Johnson is the first president and longtime president emeritus of the New School for Social Research. The collection consists of a photo album featuring the Johnson-Deyrup family, three honorary degrees granted to Johnson, and a letter certifying the passage of New York Fair Employment Act of 1945.
Alvin Johnson letters to Dannie Heineman
Consists of handwritten and typed letters from Dr. Alvin Johnson, President Emeritus of the New School for Social Research, to philanthropist Dannie N. Heineman and carbon copies of some of Heineman's replies.
American Council for Émigrés in the Professions records
The American Council for Émigrés in the Professions was founded in 1945 by Drs. Else Staudinger and Alvin Johnson to provide aid and placement for World War II refugees who had been professionals in Europe. Records contain correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, and subject files. Access is provided to this unprocessed record group, but some files may be restricted. Barrie Karp was a professor of philosophy, psychology, feminist theory, and critical race theory at The New School for twenty-five years (circa 1983-2008). These papers document her teaching career with syllabi, course notes, and student work. Also included in the collection is a small amount of correspondence with colleagues and materials related to courses Karp taught at other universities.
