Summary
The Seth Benardete Papers consist of the philosophy and classics scholar's files from his office at New York University (NYU), where he taught for 35 years. The files document Benardete's teaching at The New School, NYU, and City University of New York and scholarship; course materials; lecture notes and transcripts; typescripts; correspondence; and publications totalling around 15,000 manuscript pages.

Conditions Governing Access
With the exception of a handful of files, the Seth Benardete papers have been digitized and are available for research use online, accessible through hyperlinks found in the collection guide and directly on The New School Archives digital collections site. One manuscript is restricted until 2030: SB 05-01 Experiences and Reflections: Conversations with Seth Benardete Typescript of draft copy. (Note that there is a shorter draft of the transcript of this conversation that is available.) A handful of formerly-restricted files have not been digitized and nine files were digitized but are available onsite in the archives, only. For access to the on-site only and undigitized files, contact archivist@newschool.edu.

Processing Information
This collection was processed prior to the formation of The New School Archives. Processing was completed by Susan P. Johnson on behalf of the Seth Benardete Archive (https://benardetearchive.org/). During processing the papers were all digitized, except for a few restricted items. Almost all of the restricted items became unrestricted as of July 2017, and a further set became unrestricted in October 2020. In addition to those items that have not been digitized (that are no longer restricted), there are nine files that were digitized but that are available onsite in the archives, only. The remainder of the digitized files are available online, accessible through hyperlinks found in the collection guide.
