Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one semester of audio recordings of public conversations moderated by New School professor Steven Hoffman for his non-credit course, Instant Replay, listed in The New School's Adult Division catalog under the section, "Short Courses and Special Lectures." Open to the public, students could attend one or all of the sessions in the course. There is no known video of the events.

The New School course catalog describes the course as follows: "Instant Replay brings the sports fan a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at today's sports and its outstanding superathletes. How do these extraordinary stars formulate strategy, prepare for important games and develop their personal style of playing? How has their fame and fortune influenced their private lives? How has television exposure affected them and the sports they play? Who represents the real power behind what we see on the field? Instant Replay provides insights into these and other questions and gives the sports fan a chance to talk to some of the finest athletes now playing."

The New School Archives only holds recordings from the Spring 1978 semester class sessions. It is unknown if the Fall 1978 sessions were held and never recorded, if the recordings were lost, or if the course was, in fact, never held.

According to the catalog copy, the Spring 1978 session was to consist of ten sessions. However, the collection only documents eight sessions, beginning one week after the advertised start date. Additionally, the collection does not include most of the advertised guests.

Historical note

Instant Replay was a special lecture series held at The New School in the Spring and Fall semesters of 1978. The series consisted of interviews with prominent athletes and sporting figures, especially sportspeople playing or having played on New York City teams, conducted by host Steven Hoffman. Interview subjects advertised in course promotion included tennis player Arthur Ashe, baseball and basketball player Dave DeBusschere, baseball player Jim Bouton, basketball player Walt Frazier, hockey players Rod Gilbert and Glen Resch, soccer player Werner Roth, football coach Walt Michaels, basketball coach Willis Reed, commentators Cal Ramsey and Howard Cosell, journalists Jerry Izenberg and Dick Schaap, television producer and director Chet Forte, sport documentarian Bud Greenspan, television executive Carl Lindemann, and others.

Steven Hoffman was an instructor at The New School. In the Spring 1975 semester, Hoffman co-taught a course for The New School with Robert Liss, titled Sports in America. He was also responsible for coordinating and hosting Instant Replay, a special lecture series consisting of interviews with athletes and sporting figures held at The New School in the Spring and Fall semesters of 1978.

The term "instant replay" comes from the ability to review live sporting events repeatedly or in slow motion as the result of advances in video technology during the 1960s.
