Abstract

Worlds of Knowledge: Great Conversations was a special lecture series held at The New School in two consecutive Fall semesters in 1990 and 1991. The collection consists of audio recordings of public conversations between political scientist and New School professor Ralph Buultjens and a series of seven writers, scholars and public figures, held during the Fall 1990 semester.

The collection consists of seven audio recordings of public conversations conducted by political scientist and New School professor Ralph Buultjens for his non-credit course, Worlds of Knowledge: Great Conversations, listed in The New School course catalog under "Special Events." There is no known video of the events.

All conversations from the series advertised in the Fall 1990 New School course catalog are present in the collection. No lectures advertised in the Fall 1991 course catalog are present in The New School Archives.

Historical note

“Worlds of Knowledge: Great Conversations” was a special lecture series held at The New School in two consecutive Fall semesters in 1990 and 1991. The events consisted of conversations between political scientist and New School professor Ralph Buultjens and a series of writers, scholars and public figures. According to course catalog descriptions, these figures included Russologist and historian Robert Massie, lawyer Louis Nizer, medical physicist Rosalyn Yalow, economist Wassily Leontief, historian and United States presidential advisor Arthur Schlesinger, science fiction author Isaac Asimov, writer and daughter of scientists Marie and Pierre Curie Eve Curie, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., journalist Harrison Salisbury, feminist and United States congressional representative Bella Abzug, historian Paul Kennedy, diplomat accused of being a Soviet spy Alger Hiss and his son, the writer Tony Hiss, and film industry lobbyist Jack Valenti.

Buultjens himself taught courses on current events, international affairs and Asian history at The New School between 1972 and 2004, principally in the Adult Division (later simply called “The New School”), which were notable for their popularity.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The staff of The New School Archives and Special Collections assembled this collection from a larger set of legacy recordings transferred from The New School's Raymond Fogelman Library following the establishment of The New School Archives, circa 2012.

New School Archives staff based all description in this finding aid on course catalog text and audiocassette container inscriptions. Staff did not listen to the tapes to verify content.
