Biographical note
Elizabeth Aaron was a teacher and long-time member of the Techniques of Music faculty at the Mannes College of Music, and later the Mannes School of Music, from 1957 to 2017. She began teaching in the Extension Division while a bachelor’s degree student at Mannes, studying voice with Paul Althouse and Leslie Chabay and music theory with Felix Salzer, and serving two terms as president of the Mannes student government. After receiving her bachelor of science degree in 1958, she joined the Mannes College full-time faculty as a teacher of ear-training.
In 1979, Aaron established and became director of Mannes’s Community Services program, later known as Community Outreach. The program matched Mannes students with paid public performance opportunities at venues throughout New York City, as well as with teaching and accompanying positions at institutions such as Brandeis High School and the Boys Choir of Harlem Academy. Aaron received a Certificate of Recognition from New York City Mayor Ed Koch in 1989 for the work done by the Mannes Community Outreach program.
Aaron was appointed chairperson of Mannes’s ear-training program and co-chair of the Techniques of Music department in 1991 and was a member of the Mannes College Division Executive Committee from 1995 to 2007. She also established an ear-training curriculum for Mannes graduate students during the term of Mannes dean Joel Lester in the late-1990s.
In September of 2000, Aaron organized a conference at Mannes on the teaching of college-level ear-training, and in 2002, Aaron received The New School’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Aaron retired from the Mannes faculty in 2017.
