Margin notes in pencil are in two distinct handwritings--most are presumably by Enders, with one line change possibly by Hughes--the alterations to the poem were used in Enders's song version. The poem was published in 1942 in Hughes's, Shakespeare in Harlem

Various copies of Harvey Enders's composition, Death in Harlem: A Dramatic Song Narrative for Baritone and Orchestra, with lyrics by Langston Hughes. The earliest version is a cover page dated 1939, but the score itself is not present. A manuscript copy contains numerous annotations in pencil and is autographed by Enders. One sheet of a partial orchestra score for the work is also included. Another 1943 copy of the score also contains annotations in pencil. The latest score edition is dated 1945.

Contains manuscript piano vocal arrangements of various songs: "Waters Ripple and Flow" (a duet for soprano and baritone) and "Banks O' Doon" by Deems Taylor; "Song of the Flea" by Modest Mussorgsky; "Odalisque" by John Alden Carpenter; and "En Calesa" by F.M. Alvarez. It is unknown if any of the arrangements were ever published.
