Scope and Contents

The collection contains concert and recital programs from the Mannes College of Music and other organizations featuring either Dorothy Clark-Bergquist as soprano soloist, or Peter Bergquist as bassoonist or pianist, or both. Program dates range from the period when the Bergquists were students at Mannes College in the 1950s to their terms as faculty at the school up to 1963. A few news clippings relating to a memorial concert dedicated to Bohuslav Martinů given in 1959 are also included.

Other Mannes students and faculty are listed in program credits. In addition to Mannes programs, the collection includes a program for a double-bill performance of the operas Judgement Day by Paul Berl and Comedy on the Bridge by Bohuslav Martinů in 1951, a program for a performance of Jean-Baptiste Lully's Armide in 1953 by the Society of Young Artists for the Performance of Unusual Music featuring American baritone John Reardon as well as Mannes faculty member Carl Schachter as assistant conductor, and a program from a performance of G.F. Handel's Samson by the Oratorio Society of Flushing, New York in 1956, for which Judith Somogi was pianist.

Biographical Note

Dorothy Clark Bergquist (born August 5 1929, Queens Village, New York–died October 1 2012, Eugene Oregon) was a soprano vocalist, voice teacher, and choir director. Bergquist studied voice at the Mannes College of Music with Martial Singher and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1956. Between 1956 and 1963, Bergquist served as a member of the voice faculty of the Mannes Preparatory and Intermediate departments and the Mannes Extension Division. In November of 1959, Bergquist participated in a memorial concert in honor of Czech composer and Mannes faculty member Bohuslav Martinů held three months after his death. She also gave a recital at Carnegie Hall on February 28, 1962 with pianist Royal Hinman.

In later years, Bergquist performed as a soloist with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon Bach Festival, taught voice at Lane Community College, Willamette University, and Northwest Christian College, and maintained a private voice studio. She also served as choir director for St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Eugene, Oregon.

Peter Bergquist (born August 5 1930, Sacramento, California–died June 11 2016, Eugene Oregon) was a bassoonist, teacher, and music scholar. Bergquist studied bassoon at Eastman School of Music from 1948 to 1951, after which he served in the United State Air Force, and resumed studies at the Mannes College of Music, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1958. From 1958 to 1964 Bergquist served on the bassoon faculty of the Mannes Preparatory and Intermediate departments and the Mannes Extension Division. By 1960 Bergquist had received a Master of Arts degree in music from Columbia University, and he received his Ph.D. there in 1964 with a dissertation on the works of Italian Renaissance composer and music theorist Pietro Aaron.

In 1964, Bergquist joined the music faculty of the University of Oregon, where he taught bassoon, music history, and theory until his retirement in 1995. In addition to professional performance work as a bassoonist, Bergquist became a noted authority on the work of late Renaissance Flemish composer Orlando di Lasso. Bergquist edited the collection of essays, Orlando di Lasso Studies, published in 1999, and edited several installments of the twenty-one volume series, Orlando di Lasso: The Complete Motets, published between 1998 and 2006.

Dorothy Clark and Peter Bergquist met during their studies at Mannes College of Music, and married in 1956, the year that Clark graduated. The couple performed in several recitals and concerts at Mannes, both together and separately during their time as students and as faculty. After Peter accepted a faculty post at University of Oregon in 1964, the couple moved to and remained in Eugene, Oregon.
